philosophy talk: on love

what is love? does it exist? Love is a driving force in everyday life. Love affects every person on this planet. Love can be expressed in a multitude of ways, and can be defined and exchanged in many ways as well. In this paper, I will explore the concept of love and whether or not it exists.             Love is defined as “an intense feeling of deep affection” as well as “ a general expression of positive sentiment”. Love is “commonly contrasted with hate or lust” and can refer to friends, family, and romantic partners. Love is not only a feeling; it is also an action, as well as a broad spectrum. Love means something different to everyone. Individual’s conceptions of love may differ depending on who or what they are referring to. For example, when one says, “I love pizza”, that is very different from saying “I love my mom”. That is where the spectrum comes in. There are ranges of love, from loving a food or ac...

philosophy talk: the way things are

According to Ishmael , how did things come to be this way? In your opinion, how did things come to be this way? The novel Ishmael by Daniel Quinn tells the tale of ‘how things came to be this way’. The narrator sees an ad in the newspaper: “teacher seeks student”. He answers the ad to find the teacher is a gorilla, Ishmael who can communicate telepathically. The narrator learns from Ishmael ‘how things came to be this way’ through Socratic questioning. In this paper, I will explain Daniel Quinn’s writings of ‘how things came to be this way’, as well as elaborate on my own ideas. According to Ishmael, there are two groups, the Takers and the Leavers. He begins with the story of the Takers by asking the narrator to explain his culture’s creation myth. The narrator first insists he does not know of such a thing, until he comes to the realization that there is a story told and accepted by the takers. He starts the story with the big bang and evolution, stating that “s...

philosophy talk: freedom

What is Freedom? Are we free? The concept of freedom is one that has prevailed as a popular debate topic for years. The very foundation of countries was built on the concept of freedom. In addition, the idea of free will and fate are highly discussed in mostly religious aspects. In this paper I will explore the topic of freedom and free will.              Freedom is defined as “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action” as well as “liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another”. The essence of freedom according to these definitions appears to lie in the ability to act as one pleases to their fullest extent. Many people would consider someone such as myself, the typical college student to be free. I agree with the claim that I am, to some extent, free, but I do not think I am completely free. I do not think anyone can ever be completely free.      ...

philosophy talk: on truth

What is truth? Does it exist? ‘Truth’ is defined as that which is accordance with fact or reality. Common things that are considered to be ‘true’ are things such as “the sky is blue”, “It is Tuesday”, and “my shirt is green”. However, just because these things seem to be this way, does not mean that it is actually ‘true’. I tend to think of Descartes Meditations when I think of ‘truth’. Descartes makes the point that, when we are dreaming, everything that happens seems real, yet when we wake up we know that it did not actually happen. Therefore, how do we know that what is happening in our everyday life is real and ‘true’. While the nature of ‘truth’ is to say that it is fact, there is a possibility that this may not be accurate, as we cannot know if what we experience is ‘true’. ‘Truth’ is unique per individual, because knowledge is most likely impossible. I say most likely, because there is no way to know if knowledge is most likely impossible or not. We can think...
